Grey striped Egyptian cotton duvet cover set being cared for

A duvet cover exists to protect the insert underneath it, but that only works if the cover itself gets washed properly and often. Because it is bulkier than a flat sheet and closes with buttons or a zip, washing a duvet cover trips people up more than a regular sheet does, especially when it comes out twisted into a rope. This guide covers the right way to wash it, how often, and how to stop the insert from bunching up inside.

The short version
Close all buttons or the zip before washing, use a gentle cycle with cold or warm water and mild detergent, skip fabric softener, and dry in the shade or on low heat. Wash a duvet cover weekly to every two weeks.

How often should you wash a duvet cover?

A duvet cover sits directly against you all night, similar to a top sheet, so it collects sweat, oils and skin cells at roughly the same rate. Wash it weekly if you do not use a separate top sheet underneath, or every two weeks if you do. In peak summer or during humid monsoon months, lean toward the more frequent end of that schedule.

A duvet cover takes the same nightly wear as a top sheet, so it needs a similar wash schedule.

How to wash a duvet cover, step by step

  • Close every button or zip the closure first. An open closure catches on other laundry and twists the cover into a rope in the machine.
  • Turn it right-side out so detergent reaches the side that touches you, and shake out any lint or hair before washing.
  • Use a gentle cycle, cold or warm water. This protects the fibres and prevents shrinkage, especially in the first few washes.
  • Mild detergent, skip the softener. A normal dose is enough, and skipping softener keeps quality cotton breathable and lets it soften naturally.
  • Do not overcrowd the machine. A duvet cover is bulkier than a flat sheet and needs room to move so it rinses fully.
  • Dry in the shade or on low heat. Strong direct sun weakens fibres and can fade colour over time, so shade drying is kinder.

Keeping the insert from bunching after washing

The most common complaint about duvet covers is the insert sliding around or clumping into one corner after a wash. Duvet ties, the small fabric loops sewn into the corners of most covers, are made exactly for this. Loop them around the corresponding corner of your duvet insert and fasten before you put the cover on, and it will stay put through the wash and every night after. If your cover has no ties, safety pins in each corner work just as well.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash a duvet cover with my regular bedsheets?
Yes, as long as colours match and the machine is not overcrowded. Just close the buttons or zip first so it does not tangle with the rest of the load.

Why does my duvet cover come out twisted?
An open closure is almost always the cause. It catches on itself or other laundry and rolls into a rope. Always close it fully before washing.

How do I stop the duvet insert from clumping inside the cover?
Use the corner ties sewn into the cover to fasten it to the insert's corners, or add safety pins if your cover has none.

Can I dry a duvet cover in direct sun?
Better to dry it in the shade. Strong direct sun can fade colour and weaken cotton fibres over time, especially through repeated summer washes.
